Being a business owner does not provide a paid day off when you become sick and this seems to always happen if you have no health insurance and cannot afford a trip to the emergency room. There are great policies available for small monthly payments; you simply have dedicated some time to research the options.
It is a great achievement to begin and operate your own business but, many forget the detail of getting insurance when first starting out. The majority of us are used to a company paying at least partial insurance coverage so becoming self employed means forgetting to continue with the coverage. It can be expensive but one payment could be far less expensive than a day in the hospital.
Choosing your own policy does have some advantages in that you can decide what coverage is needed and what is not necessary. When beginning the search for the best policy for you it is important to compare a few different policies in order to get the best coverage at the lowest rate.
Policies will dramatically vary in coverage, price and deductibles. The deductible is what will be out of pocket money from you before the insurance will begin picking up the difference. These can vary in amounts so be selective when opting for the amount you want to pay. If a policy is a couple of dollars cheaper than a competitor but, the amount you have to pay up front is a difference of a couple of thousand, paying the extra will save you in the end.
Each policy will offer different coverage and may or may not include visits with specialists, physicals or a consultation. Some do offer a physical one time per year at no charge. This is good to have if you are in good shape but prefer to have a check up. Also look for companies that offer discounts for non smokers or individuals with no previous health issues.
Getting health insurance while being self employed is a necessary expense but, does not have to cost a fortune. Doing comparisons and getting only what you need will save a lot of money. Some policies automatically include unneeded coverage such as maternity. If this is a coverage that does not apply to you, do not get a policy that includes it. Read the small print completely to determine if there are limited physicians you can see or a specific amount of money each year that can be covered with the protection you are considering.
